About Our Startup
“When you’re ‘digging’ with an exciting goal in sight, the nature of the task changes completely”
– Joel Greenblatt
What problems do we solve for fund managers?
We assist fund managers generate ideas through “qualitative” and “hard to find” information. All the projects listed below can be time and resource consuming for a fund manager to do in-house.
How do we do it?
Shareholder activism: An all-cap focused project, which compiles “significant” activist filings. In addition, we compile background information of the activists, read activist filings and compartmentalize information about valuation and business insights shared by activists, read activists settlement agreements to uncover interesting terms & conditions and various screenings.
Management changes: A small and micro cap focused project, which help members identify CEOs with stellar track record, alerts them when a new CEO is appointed at the time of “significant events” like fraud, investigation by government agencies, turnaround initiative and shareholder activism etc.
Audit analytics: A small and micro cap focused project, which helps alert members about significant “audit risks” – delay in filings due to accounting fraud, internal investigation for fraud, company providing hints about the potential date for filing multi-year pending filings etc.
How we are different?
1. Qualitative and “hard to find” information
Generally, fund managers use “quantitative filters” to narrow down the stocks from a pile of publicly traded companies. We offer a unique way of using researched data for screening.
For example, most service providers will offer you the list of all CEOs appointed in, say, the last three months. Using our database, you can find the list of CEOs who have “stellar track record”, “red flag” and unique situation at the time of appointment.
2. Our USP – “Human assisted screening and alert”
In terms of screening and alert, we work as your “virtual research assistant”. You can send us an email with your custom criteria. Our team reads your criteria, runs periodic screens and alerts you on a specific situation as per your instruction. Instead of relying on a pre-defined and automated alert system, our system helps fund managers control information overload, define project-specific alert frequency and helps if there are exceptions to your general alerts.
What are our future projects?
We will invest a significant portion of our time and resources to constantly develop new projects. A few examples of our projects (small and micro cap focused):
Segment screening: Even though “segment” information is available in expensive databases, screening of companies with “loss making” segment is not possible. Similarly, if you want to find a list of loss making segments which shows “reduction” in loss in recent quarters, it may not be possible.
Patent rich companies: We are in the process of compiling a list of small and micro cap companies that possess patents.
Price crash: In addition to summarizing reasons for stock price crash, we flag stocks which are down due to no tangible reasons or due to fixable problems. Whenever stock price crashes, it is a good time to find out whether a problem is “fixable” or “not-fixable”. Many times, stocks get hit by “headline”. Even though it is easy to find reasons for a price crash, it is time consuming to do it regularly. We plan to simplify it by providing the reason for price crash.
“I’d tell him to do exactly what I did 40-odd years ago, which is to learn about every company in the United States that has publicly traded securities and that bank of knowledge will do him or her terrific good over time.”
